Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, known as Queen Elizabeth II, was born on April 21, 1926, at 2.40 am. She is the Queen of a constitutional monarchy of 16 sovereign states with territories, dependencies, and chairman of the 54 members of the Commonwealth of Nations.
Elizabeth was the eldest daughter of Prince Albert, Duke of York, and his wife, Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. During World War II, she and her sister, Princess Margaret Rose, were forced to spend much of their time safely away from the London attacks and separated from their parents. In 1947, Princess Elizabeth went with the King and Queen to South Africa. Upon her return, there was the announcement of her engagement to her distant cousin, Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten, of the Royal Navy, who later became her husband.
